New NetHack variant: notdNetHack

By K2 on April 9th, 2019 at 1:06 pm EST

There’s a new NetHack variant out called ‘notdNetHack’, its official release was yesterday, and it’s being hosted here at Hardfought on all three servers. NetHack community member ‘Demo’ is the variant author; you can view the code repository here. notdNetHack is a different take of the variant ‘dNetHack (version 3.15.1)’ with several changes, bug fixes and new branch levels. In short, it’s not dNetHack ;) You can see a change log at the link posted.

Other news – I guess I neglected to do a post write-up of the TNNT (The November NetHack Tournament). Long story short – clan OotC (Order of the Cockatrice) won overall, with clans Teenage NetHack Ninja Turtles and teamsplat taking a close 2nd and 3rd place. Luxidream was the top-scoring individual with 32 ascensions. TNNT will definitely see another go this November, so stay tuned.

More news soon…

The November NetHack Tournament has started!!

By K2 on November 1st, 2018 at 8:06 am EST

It’s official, The November NetHack Tournament officially kicked off at midnight this morning (UTC), or 8pm last night local time. We’re twelve hours in and there’s already been three ascensions, including a two-game streak.

To see the scoreboard and register a clan or join one, please visit https://www.hardfought.org/tnnt/ – there’s also an IRC channel on freenode.net, hop into #tnnt to see live game announcements and general player banter. We even have a twitter feed! See https://twitter.com/TNNT_announce for live game updates. To connect, access any of the three Hardfought NetHack servers via SSH or hterm and access the ‘Tournament’ menu.

So far so good. Kick off started with a bang, no major issues at all, just a couple look/feel tweaks to a few things and an update to the channel bot. Looking forward to a fun tournament! See you there.

New Tournament, other updates

By K2 on September 16th, 2018 at 9:42 am EST

Morning all. It’s about that time for another news update. All of the new things that we’ve been working on lately, I’ve announced everywhere but here. Should probably fix that…

The big news – ‘The November NetHack Tournament’ is on. We’ve been working on the code and the scoreboard for awhile now, and will be ready to kick it off at midnight (UTC) on November 1st. This will become the new fall season NetHack tournament to fill in the void left by /dev/null shutting down (the tribute tourney we hosted last year was a one-time event). The new tournament is based off of NetHack version 3.6.2 (bleeding edge) and will incorporate the latest bugfixes and additions to the 3.6.x branch right up until the start of the tournament – no further code changes will be made during the tournament unless it’s an important bugfix. The event will last the entire month of November, and there will be plenty of individual and clan-based achievements you can earn. We’re working on custom content as well… not every idea or plan we have will make it into the first years’ tourney, but that’s ok. This will be a ‘work in progress’ for years to come. I’ll make another announcement here and through the usual channels once player/clan registration is available. In the meantime, feel free to hang out in #tnnt on freenode.net to discuss the tournament. This is also the channel where game livelogging and github repo update announcements will occur.

Other NetHack related bits – our ‘vanilla’ versions of both 3.4.3 and 3.6.2 are now considered ‘hdf’ flavors due to cosmetic and server functionality additions to each that set them apart from the base code. 362-hdf is bleeding edge and is updated regularly as the NetHack devteam pushes new content and bugfixes. 343-hdf is a continuation of 343-NAO (which NAO no longer hosts) with mostly cosmetic improvements. Both ‘hdf’ flavors do not change or alter game play nor core functionality in any way. The public repositories for both can be found here and here.

There have been recent bugfixes to a lot of the other variants we host as well. Always a work in progress. That’s all for now, but more to follow soon.

Junethack 2018

By K2 on May 31st, 2018 at 4:57 pm EST

It’s almost that time! Junethack 2018 kicks off in just over three hours from now (midnight on June 1st UTC). It is the defacto multi-variant NetHack tournament that runs the entirety of June. We’re hosting all variants available for the tournament, across three servers in various locations (US East Coast, Europe and Australia). Be sure to see the ‘NetHack’ menu link up above for connection information. The servers in Europe and Australia are permanent fixtures and will stay up indefinitely. The EU server has been up since the /dev/null tribute tournament last fall, and the AU server we decided to bring up just recently.

Looking forward to playing and seeing what kind of competition this years’ Junethack brings. There’s already over 100 players registered and about a dozen clans formed as of this post. Should be fun! And this just in – bhaak (the organizer of Junethack) made this post here detailing this years’ tournament – https://unnethack.wordpress.com/2018/05/31/junethack-2018-the-8th-nethack-cross-variant-summer-tournament/

Any game-related issues, let me know via the usual channels. As luck would have it, I have drill the first three days of June so I’ll be out of the loop for the most part, but afterwards I’ll be around to assist with any game recoveries or others troubles. Good luck to all and have fun!

Go TeamSplat! :)
